April 6, 2007. Almost 3,000 people gather in Fexdega. The Vilagarcía Arena is a reality. Barcelona and Real Madrid delight young and old. The looks are of infinite happiness. We did it again. Well, we did it again: the public. For and because of them. By and for them, we do it. By and for them, the Vilagarcía Basket Cup has made a small hole in the history of basketball in our city.
Hugs, congratulations or words of support are no longer needed. Just looks. That is enough to know that the people, the public, the children, the teams, the press, Chiqui, Suso, the cheerleaders, the politicians and ourselves, know what it means to see the Fexdega venue turned into a basketball tournament. Nobody had imagined it twelve years ago; perhaps not even two years before, when we seriously considered going down from Fontecarmoa to La Maroma.
As our slogan that year said: "A dream come true".
Making a chronological history of the Basket Cup would be simpler, the easy thing. Putting data, numbers, teams, names, etc. could give an idea of what Vilagarcía represents for Spain in a training tournament. But no, perhaps it is preferable to accumulate feelings, memories, fights, successes and mistakes, so that at least we are able to swallow this part of the book. The one that corresponds to the Vilagarcía Basket Cup.
